NE Tarrant Digital Tuesday Meeting

Tonight we had the first meeting for hams in the NE Tarrant county area who are interested in Broadband Hamnet MESH nodes and the network we are trying to build.  For the past several months, perhaps a year or more, Rusty-AE5AE, has been having meetings that he calls “Digital Tuesday”.  But since these meetings are normally held in McKinney, which is over an hour drive from where I live, I decided it would be a good idea to plan one of these events for this area.

We had a very good turn-out tonight.  I was trying to keep my expectations low because I wasn’t sure how much interest there was in this area, outside of the small group of us from the Hurst and Bedford clubs who have already been working on our MESH network.  However, we had 2 hams from North Richland Hills whom I’d not met before, plus 5 of us (including me) who were heavily involved in the MESH planning for Grapevine/Colleyville/Southlake/HEB area.

In attendance tonight were WA5YXS, KC5ONZ, KF5SLK, N5LNX, N5XHI, N5XHK and myself KC5HWB.

Tonight we talked about these new node deployments that should be happening soon:

  • Southlake EOC, sponsored by NETARC, node should be up this week.
  • JPS Hospital should be deploying a node soon.
  • There are talks with City of Colleyville Emergency Management about a node going up on one of the water towers, which sits at about 720′ ASL.
  • A node will soon be deployed on the N5ERS tower in Flower Mound that should cover most of Grapevine and Colleyville, and at 150+’ should see to the Colleyville water tower node as well.

Exciting things happening in the MESH world for NE Tarrant county.  I will be planning another meeting next month in order to continue these talks and plans for Broadband Hamnet in this area.

  1. Hi guys! I’ve been following with interest the developments in BBHN (HSMM) in NE Tarrant, Denton, and Collin Counties. I’m a member of Mansfield Johnson Amateur Radio Service (MJARS) and I will be giving a presentation for their October meeting on ham mesh networking in an effort to increase interest in the SE Tarrant/Northern Johnson County area. There is the possibility of us co-locating a node with one of the club’s repeaters on an area water tower, pending approval, which is an exciting possibility. You can view my web site at KB5UGF.NET to see my progress with this project. Do you guys still have the “Digital Tuesday” meetings? Is there an on-air net that discusses ham mesh networking? What further developments is your club involved in? Looking forward to hearing the news (and maybe at some point “tunneling”?).
